As I Was Saying…
I was annoyed, frustrated, burned out…and straight up confused.
I worked in higher education and student affairs for 12 years. I started off excited, hopeful, really engaged, and really good!
But as the years went by, I found myself becoming more and more frustrated with being overworked and overwhelmed.
I was annoyed about being underpaid and under-appreciated. I was burned out and honestly very very bored (there I said it).
I mean there I was, all this education, skills, and experience, and I’m bored? I’m underpaid? AND I’m in debt?!? No way.
I knew it was time for me to move on to a career that was more fulfilling–one that paid more, one that I truly enjoyed doing, and one where I felt I was having the kind of impact I actually wanted to have. I also knew it was possible!
I just didn’t know where to go or how to start. It was hard to see through what felt like chaos. So what did I do?
I sat on my couch some more. I complained to my friends some more. I avoided the “So what do you do for work again?” question some more.
I also hoped a lot. And randomly applied to jobs. And hoped some more.
None of that worked for me.
At the very least I just wanted to be less annoyed, but damn, I couldn’t even get that?!
It took me years to find a way out of the mess…but I did. I learned strategic planning and organization. I implemented knowledge and tools. And, of course, I tapped into my inner bravery.
